I was looking forward to interviewing Heather Bulthuis. It’s not every day that I get to interview someone in their home. It’s usually at some restaurant. I was surprised when I pulled up to her home. It seemed like a typical tract house until started walking to the front of the house. She had turned this tract house into an oasis.
She invited me in, and she offered me a latte. Heather suggested we sit outside. We sat in one of three seating areas. This area had a patio cover and was surrounded by lush greenery that made it a little more intimate. She turned the gas fire table on as it was a little brisk still just coming out of winter in San Diego.
The soft falling water in the nearby water feature was a lovely addition to this oasis. I noticed the in-ground spa and the sauna. I asked Heather if she used them often. I figured she had since she had a glow to her and she looked very fit. She told me her and her husband use them almost every day. It’s a great way for them to be healthy and to connect without distraction.
We settled in and I asked her about her speaking. Heather has been making the rounds speaking to over 100 high schools in San Diego County this past year. She has become very highly paid and sought after. Especially since the schools she has spoken at have seen an incredible difference in their student body. Schools are waiting for her to be available to speak at their schools.
I asked her about her speech that she gives at the high schools. Heather tells me what an honor it is to speak to the high school students. She talks to them about their dreams. How to discover their passions in life and how to live a life they love. She gets down into the nitty gritty of how the brain works and how they can change their habits and get different results by understanding how the mind works.
She tells them that they are each wonderfully made and special. That they have all been given dreams to help the world around them and so they can live satisfying and fulfilling lives. I loved seeing how passionate she was just talking about these things. One thing that she really loves is that she speaks close to home. That allows her to spend time with family and friends.
She loves entertaining at her home, and I can see why. Her home is so inviting and beautiful. While spending time with Heather, I really felt the love she has for the students she speaks to and her family and friends. She’s also a philanthropist. She gives to her local church and various charities every month. That has been a joy for her to be able to contribute so much to help other people.
She’s spoken at a lot of schools, but she’s not all about work. Her and her husband, Sean went on a 3-week trip to Ireland last August. She said they had the best time, and it was great really immersing themselves into the culture. Heather loves to have fun whether she’s speaking to the students, spending time with family or her friends. She volunteers her time leading a women’s group from her church as well.
In addition to her speaking, Heather has a number best-selling book, Teenagers Achieving Dreams, 25 Easy Ways to Pursue Your Passion and Live a Life You Love and an online course that dives even deeper into building and achieving dreams. She actually donates 100 books every time she gets booked to speak.
Heather spoke to me about her schedule and how she makes sure that she puts in her schedule all of the things she wants to do before she adds in any talks. It’s very important to her to have the time to do the things she loves to do and spend time with the people that are important to her. I love her work life balance. It was truly a pleasure spending time with Heather at her beautiful home and getting to know her. She’s a true gem and a mover and a shaker.

I love this Heather! What a worthy project.
