Are You A Drifter Or A Thinker

Hill wrote of what he called “A Drift“. In his manuscript “Outwitting The Devil“ in 1938 that

People all drift through life when they stop thinking for themselves and drift away from self-determination that they can never save themselves. Napoleon Hill

This week’s lesson sure has gone along with that mind set. We all must be thinking for ourselves. Imaging what we want goes along way towards our ultimate (DMP) Definite Major Purpose.

Imagination, we all do it but do we put a plan down on paper or a calendar how we are going to achieve it! That’s the truth of the matter.

This week’s exercise MIND BLOWING ! Again! Think about it. We all imagine doing something from buying a house to getting a better job or even something as easy as making dinner!

It takes planning to do all of those by thinking backwards with each step needed to accomplish the task that we are imagining. I know I’m guilty of thinking straight to the end result and going ‘I can’t reach that.’

But if we imagine each step like how the battleship goes from inception to being in battle there is always a plan and it starts with imagination! Continue to imagine yourself in your movie but at the same time map out your moves to get there.

If you’re not planning you are drifting. And as Wattle said:

The person who wishes to get rich must spend his leisure hours in contemplating his vision, and in earnest ( thanksgiving ) that the reality is being given to him. Wallace Wattles

I have found throughout the past weeks by serving others before myself and following the exercises each week I’m imagining and planning more and not just daydreaming. Remember Haanel wrote in 8:11:

Imagination is the (constructive) form of thought which must precede every constructive form of action. Charles Haanel

So let’s continue to imagine what our lives can be all the while getting in touch with our future selves. Keep exercising your mind and continue to build your plan of action.

  • Wow, Scott, this is an incredible deep dive into the reading, and I’m so impressed by how you’ve assimilated these powerful ideas! You’ve brilliantly highlighted the shift from drifting to intentional thinking and planning with such clarity. The way you connect imagination to action, emphasizing the importance of mapping out steps instead of leaping straight to the end result, is insightful… it’s clear you’re truly engaging with the exercises. Keep building that connection with your future self… your thoughtful approach is setting the foundation for amazing growth!
