The Most Precious Gift

I spent last week reading obituaries for class. So many thoughts were going through my head about the lives I was reading about. Some died after a long life and others were too young to be gone so soon. Each one of them left behind people that loved them for who they were. Their legacies would live on in the lives of those they touched along life’s path.

This week’s new scroll reading starts with “I will live each day as if it is my last.” There is such a strong declaration of intent in that sentence. Do most of us live our lives that way? If we did, what would that last day look like?

It’s perfectly normal to go about life assuming that you will be here tomorrow but one day that won’t be the case. But with a new sense of urgency what would be different if tomorrow was your last day?

I know from talking with the generations in my family that have gone on ahead, that there was only one thing in common that they wanted at the end of their life. That one thing was to spend time with the people that they love. It wasn’t presents or even phone calls. It was time spent together.

So, as I reflected on what I would want, I thought of all the people in my life that mean so much to me and what I would like to share with them. To love deeply, to laugh, to cry, to hug, to forgive and be forgiven, and share warm memories and words of wisdom for their future. Yes, it would be time together. It’s the most valuable gift to give to each generation.

  • Donna, this is such a heartfelt reflection, and it really hits home. That realization that time, not things, is the most precious gift feels so simple yet carries so much weight. The way you’ve connected the wisdom of those who have gone before with the urgency of *now* is powerful. Keep holding onto that intention to love deeply and share your presence because that’s the kind of legacy that truly lasts.
