minutes remaining

Driving the car for the first time on a familiar route becomes unfamiliar. It’s one thing to be a passenger and look out the windows = noticing everything that is of interest. The first turns are noted. After a few more it becomes, did we turn right or left?

Soon we have no sense of distinct direction but we know we are going; moving closer to our destination. But we all we have is time to note how far we have gone and how far we have left to travel.

Now I’m at the wheel for the first time. All is familiar at first until we get to the end of the street. Right? Left? Okay hold it a minute. Which way?

Slow at first, cautious. Ah that looks familiar and I pick up speed. Whoops this looks unfamiliar. I must have missed a turn. U-turn. Let me go back a few miles. Whew! Now I am really mixed up. Oh, wait a minute. I recognize that building. Turn towards it. Ah! right. Should have turned here.

On my way again. Things looking somewhat familiar but not totally comfortable. I know I read the map a few times. Thought I memorized the route. Start to relax. This looks familiar. Map says I should see the pointy building. I do. Minutes later. I arrived!
