Adjust Your Attitude To Fulfill Your Dreams

This week I was introduced to the inspiring story of Aimee Mullins, a gifted athlete and actress who exhibits living out the Hero’s journey. Having her legs amputated at the knee when she was one year old left her disabled in other’s eyes, but she chose to see herself as super-able.

Her positive mental attitude and personal successes are impressive for even an able-bodied person. But what was the spark that caused her to achieve so much in spite of physical barriers?

Aimee discovered the definite major purpose for her life. I saw in her the passion for life, filled with enthusiasm and belief in herself. What drove her was a desire to not let her physical limitations define her and to break free from the stereotypes of what could be possible. She was creating a new reality.

Aimee’s drive, confidence and passion was contagious. She doesn’t look at being disabled as an obstacle but rather an opportunity. People around her saw in her that spark of an idea and wanted to help her achieve it. She partnered with fashion designer Alexander McQueen and walked the runway in hand carved wooden legs made from ash. She was redefining what beauty was.

We all have limitations – some visible and others invisible. What I observed in Aimee’s story is how we view ourselves and act on our big dreams is really what makes all the difference. Do we choose to see only our limitations as obstacles we can’t get around or do we see opportunities for growth and great achievement?

We can see inspiration all around us. People who choose to dream big, are persistent, think positively and enthusiastically pursue their definite major purpose. They don’t get there alone. They have others who catch the vision and encourage them along the path.

Having a mastermind and focusing on gratitude for the big and small things will help us all on our own Hero’s Journey.

  • Donna, this is such a beautiful reflection on resilience and perspective. Aimee Mullins’ story really shows how our mindset defines what’s possible, and I love how you tied it back to our own journeys. The way we see ourselves and the support we allow in can make all the difference. Your insight on gratitude and having a mastermind is a great reminder that we don’t have to go it alone!
