Discipline is not a bad word.

Our class continues to focus on the Franklin Makeover by looking for the traits in ourselves as well as in others. This week I am personally focused on discipline. One of the definitions for discipline is to impose order from the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

I have really struggled with reconciling my natural bent to be autonomous with being disciplined. Something within me has felt the restraint of discipline as being a bad thing that limits my freewheeling freedom to create life on my terms.

The first step for me this week was to acknowledge that discipline is not a bad thing. Discipline requires a person to be able to control themselves, work hard or behave according to norms without needing others to tell you what to do.

It requires a person to control their feelings, overcome weaknesses, pursue what you think is right all the while fighting the temptation to quit.

What I found is that autonomy and discipline aren’t opposites, they actually work together to help achieve personal goals. My mindset was the problem, but now I have a better understanding of how to view discipline more positively in the future.

  • Donna, it’s so inspiring to see you show up each week and share your reflections! It’s easy to see discipline as something restrictive, but reframing it as a tool for autonomy is a huge shift. The fact that you’re recognizing how these two can actually work *together* instead of against each other is a game-changer, especially for me, because it was like getting a jolt to the brain with that realization. With this new perspective, discipline isn’t limiting your freedom… it’s giving you the structure to create life *on your terms*! Thank you for this share! Loved it.

  • Acknowledging the virtues of others is the very best way to show you what you can do. Because it’s in you! Great job!

  • Remember Donna, that you would not be able to see the virtue in others if you did NOT have it already within you!!
