Conforming
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
– Maya Angelou
When you become more aware that your daily being falls in line with conforming to what is needed of you to stay in line with how society needs you to be, it hurts. It hurts more when you realize you are fighting and breaking out of a mentality tight shell that gets harder when fear sinks in.
I should never fear change especially when it is bringing me towards who I was made to be. Since starting MKE, I am increasingly removing myself from situations that reinforce the societal schmear I have subjected myself to over the years. I am also pushing myself to utilize the Law of Substitution when my mind jumps into the negative cranial chatter.
“You become what you give your attention to. If you yourself don’t choose what thoughts and images you expose yourself to, someone else will, and their motives may not be the highest.” – Epictetus
I start to think of who needs me to stay the same? Why do I at times resist the hero’s journey? If I have this deep burning desire to break from the things that are making me unhappy, why am I not pushing myself harder?
I do realize I will hit resistance when going against the societal grain. I also know it is in my best interest to choose what makes me happy and keep pushing. The gal in the glass is cheering me on to keep on keeping on.

Jennifer, this hits deep. That moment when you see how much of your life has been shaped by external expectations—it’s both revealing and uncomfortable at the same time. The fact that you’re consciously removing yourself from the societal “schmear” and actively using the Law of Substitution shows just how much power you’re reclaiming. And that last line? Chills. The gal in the glass knows the truth… keep listening to her—she’s guiding you exactly where you’re meant to go!
